Terrell Sandefur owns the SoChi Gallery and is Hamilton’s partner on the “Macon Man” comics, though Sandefur said he was never a fan of comics before. He still knew of Craig Hamilton. An intern at the gallery, a friend of Hamilton’s, pointed him out as he walked down Second Street. Sandefur chased him down for an introduction.

Two weeks later, the SoChi Gallery was hosting “Comically Erotic,” a collection of racy, extremely sexual works done in Hamilton’s signature style.

“He’s very much like Peter Pan,” Sandefur said. “He is child-like about Macon. He has a relationship with all that is downtown, from the animals to the homeless people to the business people — everybody he meets he talks to.”

Party for a cause

Drs. Bob and Becky Shaw of Clive usually aren’t big into entertaining. But within a two-week stretch in June, they hosted fundraising events at their home benefiting the Des Moines Symphony (75 guests), the Polk County Master Gardener’s Tour (more than 700 visitors) and the Des Moines Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (DMIHN).

Approximately 140 guests at the last event explored the Shaws’ perennial and water gardens, sipped wine, sampled hors d’oeuvres and listened to music while increasing their awareness of the plight of homeless families in Des Moines.
