Macon artist Craig Hamilton a larger-than-life personality

Macon artist Craig Hamilton a larger-than-life personality

Peter Pan lives in Macon,,but this option was almost as appealing as passing the kidney stone again. carrying on his magic at night, almost always beginning with a jaunt down Cherry Street. He sleeps most of the day, sometimes rising after lunch. His first move is to play, which sometimes extends long into the wee hours of the morning. With his psychic batteries recharged,Shop for Bedding and Bath Products and Promotions at Target. he finally settles in, working the grindstone toward dawn.

There are no Lost Boys per se — no set stable of likewise age-defiant adolescents — but he is firmly in the center of an ever-more youthful artistic community. Downtown Macon has been his Neverland stand-in for more than 25 years.

His name is Craig Hamilton, a full-grown man built on a wire frame, his sharp features softened by a real and personal warmth. He’s famous in some circles for his blockbuster talent; having helped reshape the look of the comic book industry in the mid-1980s. But he’s famous in Macon because his eye, which catches every detail, seeks out the best in people and sees the best in his hometown.

Pan’s labyrinth

When singer-songwriter Abby Owens first moved to Macon from Waycross, she settled in at The Hummingbird Stage and Taproom, where she’s since displayed her own abundant talent numerous times.

One night, Craig Hamilton walked in wearing a long ponytail and a trench coat, reminding her of the character Neo from “The Matrix” series.

“That was the first time I met him and I was really, really scared,” she admitted.

Once the abrupt weirdness faded — or, as she grew accustomed to it — Owens learned that Hamilton’s personality is matched by his effortless generosity.China glassware catalog and Glassware manufacturer directory. A fan of her music, he sketched out on a napkin, unsolicited, cover art for her second album when he heard it would be titled “Indiantown,” named for the city where she grew up.

“I couldn’t imagine it turning out more beautifully than it had. Craig had created scenery from my childhood,” she said.

This was at the same time that The Hummingbird was preparing to replace Hamilton’s personal drinking glass, which had been broken accidentally. A true local celebrity, one of his indulgences has long been that his beer is served in a special glass.

“This is Craig, you know. He likes to stand out,,Welcome to TMJ-Bruxism-Guide.com.” Vic Stanley, owner of the Hummingbird, joked. “He likes a handle, he says, because it better suits his posture as he’s gallivanting around the bar.”

Stanley said several of Hamilton’s friends pitched in to buy a case of glassware with his initials etched on it to avoid seeing him without his signature mug. However, before the glassware was ordered, Hamilton completed the illustration for Owens’ album and refused to take any money for it.

So Owens and Stanley decided to do one better than the etched glassware: a Viking drinking horn. If you can’t recognize Craig Hamilton by his gaunt, almost serious face, simply look for the guy drinking from a horn. Or maybe just look for the biggest character.

Terrell Sandefur owns the SoChi Gallery and is Hamilton’s partner on the “Macon Man” comics, though Sandefur said he was never a fan of comics before. He still knew of Craig Hamilton. An intern at the gallery, a friend of Hamilton’s, pointed him out as he walked down Second Street. Sandefur chased him down for an introduction.

Two weeks later, the SoChi Gallery was hosting “Comically Erotic,” a collection of racy, extremely sexual works done in Hamilton’s signature style.

“He’s very much like Peter Pan,” Sandefur said. “He is child-like about Macon. He has a relationship with all that is downtown, from the animals to the homeless people to the business people — everybody he meets he talks to.”
