Samsung: LED TV Sales to Grow Five Fold in 2010


TVs featuring LED backlights are about a third thinner than those lit by traditional cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) and have a longer lifespan. They offer more vivid images, with greater contrast and color range, proponents say.

Yoon Boo-keun, president of Samsung's visual display division said Samsung plans to outperform the rest of the industry in the LCD TV segment, while "vastly" outperforming the LED TV market next year.

However, unlike in 2009, when Samsung was virtually alone in the LED category in the first half of the year, Yoon said he expects "heated" competition in 2010.

Yoon was speaking at a press conference ahead of the IFA trade show in Germany. His remarks were embargoed until Friday.

"LED TV has a vivid picture quality, a slim design and is eco-friendly. It saves about 40 percent of energy when compared to a traditional LCD TV of the same size," Shim said.

"After four years of using an LED television, the costs savings alone would be as much as the price of a 30-inch-grade LCD model."

A major obstacle for widespread adoption of LED sets is however the price premium, which can be as much as $700 over a traditional LCD model of the same size.

"Going forward, the entire market will shift to LED. LED is the best television technology made available so far," Shim said.

But Eyman argues that red-light and school-zone cameras are just "another way for the government to pick our pockets."

He said people resent the "Big Brother surveillance" of traffic cameras and that they can't plead their case to a live police officer.
