US Stocks Climb; Financials Lead After Jobs, Trade Data

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 80 points after the number of people filing for unemployment benefits dropped and the U.S. trade deficit narrowed.

The Dow rose 0.8% to 10467. Financials led the measure higher, with Bank of America up 2.5% and J.P. Morgan Chase up 2.2%. McDonald's was the only Dow component in the red, sliding 2.6%.

The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.9% to 2249. The Standard & Poor's 500-share index rose 1% to 1109, led by its consumer stocks.

In a week otherwise light on economic data, Thursday's reports added momentum to a market struggling to break out of a tight trading range. Following last week's better-than-expected monthly jobs report, initial unemployment claims fell by 27,000 to 451,000 in the week ended Sept. 4, the Labor Department said in its weekly report. The drop was much bigger than the decline of 2,000 economists were expecting. However, new claims for the previous week, ended Aug. 28, were revised upward to 478,000 from 472,000.

Separately, the U.S. trade deficit contracted sharply in July, posting its biggest drop in 17 months, as exports of airplanes surged and imports fell across the board, according to the Commerce Department.Description:2U compact fluorescent.

U.S. stocks tracked European markets' gains. The Stoxx Europe 600 index rose 1.1% after Ireland's government successfully conducted a bond auction that saw relatively strong international demand.

The Bank of England left its key lending rate unchanged at a record low 0.5% and left its 200 billion pound ($309 billion) asset-purchase program on pause. Both moves were widely expected.

The dollar weakened against both the euro and the yen. Software company Adobe jumped 8.8% after Apple said it has relaxed restrictions on applications developers for its iPhones and iPads. Apple had previously banned Adobe's Flash products from its mobile devices. Shares of Apple edged up 0.9%.

Kraft Foods gained 0.4% after Swiss chocolate company Barry Callebaut said it will become Kraft's key global cocoa and industrial chocolate supplier. The deal is expected to more than double Barry Callebaut's existing business with Kraft.Our knowledge of products covers auto/led downlight.

Retailer Men's Wearhouse gained 4% after its fiscal second-quarter profit grew 7.7%. The retailer reported higher sales and improved margins, which helped earnings top analysts' expectations.
