Man remanded over robbery that led to OAP’s death

Confirmation came as 20-year-old Darren Valliday-Smyth appeared before Belfast Magistrates Court accused of assaulting Mr Crawford on the night of the alleged raid with intent to resist arrest.

Valliday-Smyth, of no fixed address, is also charged with possessing a prohibited weapon, namely a CS gas canister, and with attempted robbery.

A detective sergeant told the court he could connect the accused with each of the alleged offences.

No application for bail was made, and Valliday-Smyth was remanded in custody to appear again at court via video-link on November 11.

His barrister said the court would be informed at that stage if he was to seek bail.

She also asked for Valliday-Smyth to be taken for an assessment at the prison hospital.
